WALK IT...

Cross Lakeland Challenge (4 days)

This trip starts in the Ennerdale valley. From here we will ascend Steeple and Pillar before heading on to Great Gable. From this fantastic summit we have great views back to where we started and also to where we are heading. We then descend to Sprinkling Tarn and continue on to Angle Tarn, before the final descent to Great Langdale.

Day 2 starts from Great Langdale and the famous Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. We climb steeply back up to the summit of Pavey Ark by ascending Jack’s Rake before heading over the Langdale Pikes and on to High Raise, the most central fell of the Lake District, before descending down to Grasmere via Helm Crag.

Day 3, from Grasmere we walk up to Grisedale Tarn. This tarn nestles below many major peaks, one of them our next objective - Fairfield. From this summit great views down Windermere unfold to Morecambe Bay. Views across to our previous day’s walk show the fantastic landscape we have travelled through. From here we traverse across the summits of Hart Crag and Dove Crag before we descend via Scandale Pass down to Brothers Water.

Our final day starts with the walk up to Thornthwaite Beacon. We then head across to High Street to follow the line of the old Roman road. We follow the broad ridge north with views down to Ullswater and Haweswater as we make our way to our final summit, Loadpot Hill. From here we head down to the Bronze Age remains on Moor Divock and our journey’s end at Pooley Bridge.

This route can also be done in winter by those with some winter walking experience.
